What is pycnogenol?
Pycnogenol is an alternative name for the proanthrocyanidins, chemical substances belonging to one of the most beneficial groups of plant flavonoids. Pycnogenols are found in many plant species, particularly in the seeds of grapes; however one of the richest sources of these compounds is the bark of the maritme pine (Pinus maritima).
Pycnogenol (with a capital P) is the trademark for a specific proanthrocyanadin extract derived from maritime pine bark. Pycnogenols are powerful antioxidants whose protective effects are manifest in a number of tissues (see below).
What does pycnogenol do?
Pycnogenols are potent antioxidants, with an antioxidant activity approximately fifty times that of vitamin C. Because of the chemical structure of pycnogenols, they can be incorporated into and protect both the aqueous (cytoplasmic) and lipid (cell memrane) phases of cells from damage by free radicals.
Pycnogenols also promote increased availability of vitamin C within the body. Pycnogenol antioxidants are particularly effective for maintaining normal functioning of blood vessels, and the eyes, as well as maintaining normal strength, flexibility and suppleness of the skin.
Pycnogenol also helps maintain normal response by the body to allergic or inflammatory challenge.
Are there adverse effects from taking pycnogenols?
There are no reports of significant adverse effects from taking pycnogenols. Mild gastrointestinal disturbance may occasionally occur in susceptible individuals.
